Escritor de ciencia ficción y crítico estadounidense. Nacido en el seno de una distinguida familia afroamericana, Delany estudió en el City College de Nueva York. Publicó su primera novela en 1962. Sus obras, cargadas de imaginación y aclamadas por la crítica, abordan temas sociales y raciales, la sexualidad, las búsquedas heroicas, y la naturaleza del lenguaje. Dhalgren (1975), su novela más controvertida, narra la historia de un joven bisexual en busca de su identidad en una ciudad populosa y decadente. Sus otros escritos incluyen las novelas Babel-17 (1966, Premio Nebula), La intersección de Einstein (1967, Premio Nebula) y Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand [Estrellas en mi bolsillo como granos de arena] (1984), además de libretos para películas, radio y libros de historietas de la Mujer Maravilla. Entre sus publicaciones ensayísticas figuran Longer Views: Extended Essays [Perspectivas amplias: ensayos extensos] (1996) y Shorter Views: Queer Thoughts and the Politics of the Paraliterary [Perspectivas acotadas: ideas homosexuales y la política de lo paraliterario] (1999).
